What is a class action lawsuit?

A class action lawsuit is a lawsuit filed by one or more plaintiffs on behalf of others who have a similar legal claim. Because they allow people to join together as a group in a single lawsuit against one or more defendants, class action lawsuits provide an economical and efficient method to recover monetary damages caused by others' wrongdoing. Class action lawsuits also encourage more responsible behavior on the part of corporate defendants.

1. Optical Disk Drive Settlement

This case was brought to the court by plaintiffs who alleged that a conspiracy existed involving ODD (DVD-RW, DVD-ROM or COMBO drives) suppliers who were fixing, maintaining or stabilizing their prices at artificially high levels that violated federal and state antitrust laws. On February 21, 2019, the Court approved the settlement totaling $205 Million that is owed between the multiple defendant companies.

Who is eligible:

- Individuals who purchased a computer with an internal or external disk drive between 2003-2008

- While a resident of AZ, CA, DC, FL, HI, KS, ME, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NY, NC, OR, TN, UT, VT, WV, or WI

Potential award: up to $10 per disk drive

2. Auto Parts Settlement

This settlement came from an alleged conspiracy amongst the largest manufacturers in the automotive industry to fix prices, rig bids, and allocate markets and customers in the U.S. that violate federal and state antitrust laws. Several rounds of settlements have already been approved by the courts.

Who is eligible:

- Individuals who bought or leased a new vehicle since 1995

- While a resident of AZ, AR, CA, DC, FL, HI, IA, KS, ME, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NY, NC, ND, OR, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, WV, or WI

3. Purex Natural Elements Laundry Detergent Settlement

This class action was brought to the Court because of the misleading labeling, marketing and advertising of Purex laundry detergent to have “Natural Elements” despite its synthetic ingredients. The case finally reached a $1.5 million settlement.

Who is eligible:

- Individuals who purchased any Purex Natural Elements Laundry Detergent products between May 19, 2013, and March 8, 2019

Claims-filing deadline: 8/10/2019
Potential award: $2 to $4 per product

4. Lithium Ion Battery Settlement

This case was brought against the largest manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for their participation in allegedly fixing the price of cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells. The individuals and businesses who purchased these batteries may have had to pay more for certain products because they contained these lithium ion batteries. A $113 million legal settlement was reached to compensate those who were affected by the price-fixing.

Who is eligible:

- Residents of the United States from January 1, 2000 to May 31, 2011

- And who purchased a product that included a lithium ion battery such as laptop PCs, mobile phones, camcorders, cordless power tools, etc.
